Musicians from
SALUTEMUS are giving a concert in the beautiful and little known church of St
Mary at Berkley on Saturday 22nd September at 7.00pm. Paul Dowbekin,
organ, will be joined by the Voller string quartet and the soprano Alicia
Little in a programme that will include the Sinfonia from Bach’s Cantata 188,
Vivaldi’s ‘Nulla in mundo’ and Albinoni’s Adagio.
The church is not
often open to the public so this is a wonderful opportunity to see the fine
interior with its striking dome and many Georgian features.
The organ is a
particularly fine example of the instruments made by W G Vowles of Bristol,
installed in the church in 1868 and rebuilt in the 1990s. It is considered by
many to be superior to the later instruments that Vowles built and it is a pleasure
to look at, with imposing and highly decorated pipes, as it is to hear.
Tickets cost £10 and
are available from 01373 830519 or paul@salutemus.co.uk
or at the door.
